Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales, becoming the first film of 2026 to reach that milestone. The achievement comes roughly two months after its April 1 debut in theaters.
The pace marks a slower climb compared with its predecessor. The 2023 blockbuster, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, reached the same threshold in under a month during its original run and ultimately finished with about $1.36 billion globally.
Despite the difference in speed, the new entry maintained strong momentum. It opened at No. 1 across global box office charts and held that position for three consecutive weekends in both domestic and international markets.
With this result, the Super Mario film franchise has climbed into the top 10 highest-grossing animated franchises worldwide, now ranking ninth overall. Both major films in the franchise remain among the most commercially successful video game adaptations ever released.
The story in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows Mario, Luigi, and their friends as they venture into space on a mission to rescue Rosalina from Bowser Jr.
