Amazon MGM’s new fantasy action film Masters of the Universe opened to a modest box office result, taking second place in North America with an estimated $29.3 million in ticket sales.
International markets added another $25 million, bringing the film’s worldwide opening total to approximately $54 million.
Despite the recognizable source material and large-scale production, the launch is considered soft relative to expectations. The film reportedly carried a production budget of nearly $200 million, excluding marketing expenses. Given those costs, the film will need sustained audience turnout in the coming weeks to approach profitability.
Masters of the Universe draws from the long-running Mattel franchise centered on the character He-Man. The story follows Prince Adam, who was sent to Earth as a child and later discovers the Power Sword, which leads him back to his home world of Eternia. There, he embraces his identity as He-Man and joins forces with allies like Teela to defend the planet from the villain Skeletor.
