Disney+ has secured a new live-action series based on Casper the Friendly Ghost after a competitive five-way bidding war, Deadline reported.

According to Deadline, the project is being developed by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who previously served as executive producers on the Disney+ series Goosebumps. The duo will write the new series, with Letterman also attached to direct. Both will executive produce alongside Steven Spielberg, who was an executive producer on the 1995 film. The series is being produced by Universal Content Productions.

The series remains in early development, with plot details still under wraps, though Deadline reports it will serve as a modern reimagining of the classic ghost story, potentially with a darker tone similar to Wednesday and its take on the Addams Family.

Casper first appeared in 1945 in animated shorts produced by Famous Studios and released through the late 1950s. The character has since appeared in comic books, television series, and Universal Pictures’ 1995 live-action film, becoming a recognizable figure in family entertainment for decades.

No release window or casting details have been announced.
