Universal has unveiled that Universal United Kingdom Resort will be the official name of its United Kingdom destination. The announcement marks another major milestone for the project as preparations move forward for construction on what will become Universal’s first theme park resort in Europe.

Located in Bedford, approximately 45 minutes outside of London, the new resort is scheduled to welcome guests in 2031. The destination will feature a large-scale theme park filled with themed lands and attractions. In addition to the park itself, plans include a 500-room hotel and a dedicated entertainment district offering shopping, dining, and more.

The naming announcement arrives nearly three years after Universal confirmed it had purchased the over 500-acre Bedford site in 2023, a move that signaled the company’s intentions to expand its global footprint into the European market.

In a joint statement, Comcast Co-CEOs Brian Roberts and Mike Cavanagh described the project as a significant achievement for the company.

This is a proud moment for our company as we bring the first Universal theme park and resort to Europe. The United Kingdom is a highly attractive market and builds on the significant investments we’ve made elsewhere around the globe to create extraordinary experiences for millions of guests that are rooted in the stories and worlds only Universal can deliver.

Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, described the resort as part of Universal’s plan to reach new audiences.

We have a bold ambition to bring Universal’s innovative and immersive experiences to new audiences. Universal United Kingdom Resort reflects that long-term strategy focused on key markets while continuing to enhance our existing parks and strengthen our position as a destination of choice for guests.”

The development is also expected to bring major infrastructure improvements to the region. The UK Government has committed £1.3 billion toward transportation and local infrastructure projects that will support the resort and improve access for both residents and visitors.

Universal has yet to reveal which properties are planned for the park’s themed lands and attractions. However, discussion among fans and industry watchers has centered on several possible franchises, including Back to the Future, Waterworld, Minions, Jurassic World, and Paddington. Additional reports, including coverage from the BBC, have suggested The Lord of the Rings and James Bond could be among the intellectual properties in development.
