Disney is reportedly looking to develop a third film in the animated Moana franchise.
Dwayne Johnson, who portrays the demigod Maui in the films, teased the project while promoting the upcoming live-action Moana.
Speaking at a press event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Johnson acknowledged that conversations around a third film have already taken place.
“Yes, we have talked about ‘Moana 3,’ yes,” Johnson said. “But first, live-action ‘Moana,’ we’ll let that come out first. We have the amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers … they will pen ‘Moana 3.’”
Further details about the upcoming animated film are not available, though Auliʻi Cravalho and Johnson are expected to return as Moana and Maui, respectively.
The original Moana released in 2016 and became a major box office success, earning more than $643 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. Its sequel, released in 2024, expanded the franchise’s reach even further, pulling in over $1.05 billion worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.
The live-action adaptation is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2026.
