Disney is pulling back the curtain on one of the most anticipated additions coming to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, revealing the official name, storyline, and two major attractions planned for the upcoming villainous expansion.

The new area will officially be called Villains Land, bringing a darker twist to the fairytale-inspired storytelling found throughout Magic Kingdom.

A New Story for Villains Land

Rather than recreating a specific Disney film, the land will tell an original story inspired by some of the studio’s most recognizable villains.

The story begins deep within a mysterious forest, where guests will encounter the remains of a shattered wishing well. Once upon a time, an evil wish corrupted the stone and broke open the structure, unleashing the well’s dark magic throughout the forest.

The villains have been drawn to the forest in search of the remaining power, using the dark magic to create elaborate lairs for themselves. Each lair reflects the personality of its villain and invites guests into a tantalizing treasure trove of treats, trinkets, and more temptations

Disney says the land will be comparable in size to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, giving guests space to explore the various environments, shops, and dining locations scattered throughout the area.

Maleficent Coaster

One of the two major attractions will put guests directly in the path of Maleficent.

First announced at D23 2024, the coaster will send riders racing through the enchanted briar surrounding Maleficent’s mountaintop fortress.

Imagineers also teased that the attraction will incorporate elements that have not previously been attempted on similar Disney attractions, potentially making it one of the more distinctive coasters at Magic Kingdom.

Mirror Realm Dark Ride

The second major attraction will take guests through the Magic Mirror and into a mysterious realm filled with Disney Villains. The experience begins in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace, where guests will encounter the Magic Mirror before being transported into his mystical Mirror Realm.

On the other side of the glass, guests will come face-to-face with countless Disney Villains, conjured in ways only the Magic Mirror can do. A combination of special effects and physical sets will help create the otherworldly environment and bring these iconic characters into the experience.

A Darker Take on Magic Kingdom

Villains Land is designed to expand Magic Kingdom’s fairytale storytelling while taking the park into a much darker direction.

The land’s visual identity is being influenced by the artistic styles associated with classic Disney animations, along with architectural inspiration gathered by Imagineers during research trips to Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain.

Imagineers have described their approach as “Conjured Architecture,” drawing on elements of Art Nouveau and Modernisme, including swirling natural patterns, rich colors, and dramatic architectural forms.

Disney first announced plans for Villains Land at D23 in 2024. The latest announcement provides the most substantial look yet at what guests can expect from the massive expansion.

Additional details about Villains Land, including its opening timeline, have not yet been announced.
