Disney has revealed new details for the upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, including the backstory that will set the stage for guests’ visit to Monstropolis.

The Backstory

The land’s story centers on a citywide celebration known as H.U.M.A.N. Day, set after the events of Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. movie. In this new era, Monstropolis has shifted away from scream-based energy and now runs on laughter instead.

That shift didn’t just overhaul the city’s power system. It also reshaped how monsters and humans view each other. For generations, humans were considered dangerous, toxic, and completely off-limits.

Following the discovery by James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski that laughter generates far more energy than screams, Monstropolis entered a period of transformation. Fear gradually gave way to curiosity, opening the door to a new era of understanding between humans and monsters.

To help tell this story, Disney introduced an in-world newspaper known as the Monstropolis Horn, which covers the decision to formally welcome humans into Monstropolis.

A newly formed government agency, the Department of Human Relations, plays a key role in making that possible. The department was established to help monsters better understand humans. Its most ambitious initiative is H.U.M.A.N. Day, the first event designed specifically to invite humans into the city.

The acronym stands for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,” and serves as the reason guests can visit Monstropolis. The event is described as both a celebration and a cultural exchange, marking the first time humans have ever been granted access to the city.

During their visit, guests will be able to explore Monstropolis, meet its residents, enjoy food offerings, and get a glimpse of daily life in the monster world.

New Locations Confirmed

Disney also confirmed two locations for the land that have appeared in previously released concept art but had not been officially acknowledged until now.

Harryhausen’s, the sushi and Japanese restaurant featured in Monsters, Inc., will be recreated as a dining location inside Monstropolis. Disney also listed the Glob Theater as part of the expansion, but has not shared specifics about what theater show it will house.
