Disney has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Villains Land at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Disney Legend and former animator Andreas Deja, renowned for his work on infamous Disney villains such as Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, Jafar from Aladdin, and Scar from The Lion King, has been announced as a consultant for the project.

Deja emphasized that these characters serve as the best source materials for Imagineers to use and reference when conceptualizing the land, offering rich backstories, bold visuals, and distinct personalities.

The creation of the land started with the animation source material and the artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios who created it. However, Imagineers recognized the importance of capturing the essence of the characters’ animation in the physical structures and overall aesthetics of the land. To achieve this, they traveled to Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain, to study the architecture and distinctive characteristics of each city.

The research trips concentrated on the historical architectural styles of both cities. In Paris, Imagineering explored the Art Nouveau design that flourished in the late 1800s. This style is characterized by its natural motifs and swirling designs, which create an effect where nature appears to be “cursed” or magically frozen in time. Conversely, the team examined Barcelona’s Modernisme art style, which showcases elements that impart an otherworldly, unnerving appearance to the architecture, and features less natural patterns.

The team noted a rich color palette in the architectural elements they encountered, particularly in the stained-glass windows and painted metals. These observations helped the team understand how to bring the beautiful, deep jewel tones of the animated villains to life in the land’s buildings.

Imagineering’s research resulted in the team coining the term “Conjured Architecture,” which describes the combination of historical elements and fantastical worlds.

Villains Land serves as an expansion to Magic Kingdom, situated beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The land will feature two major attractions, along with options for dining and shopping. Disney has not provided further information regarding these offerings.
