Warner Bros. has brought DC’s Blue Beetle to the big screen, and it takes viewers on a thrilling superhero adventure. This highly anticipated film introduces audiences to a lesser-known hero from the DC Universe, one who is also serving as the first character in James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

Blue Beetle follows the story of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña). At the start of the movie, Jaime just finishes college and returns home to his family in Palmera City. Now a college graduate, he has the ambition to move ahead in life and become successful, but he finds that harder to achieve than he anticipated. Instead, he lands a job with his sister as a cleaner for Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) of Kord Industries but is fired soon after due to his behavior. Fortunately for him, he is offered a job by Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of former Kord Industries’ CEO Ted Kord.

Expecting a job when he arrives to meet Jenny Kord, he is instead hurriedly handed and entrusted with a burger box containing an ancient Scarab with alien biotechnology—though he is unaware. Jaime’s life forever changes as the box is opened and he’s attacked by the Scarab and chosen to be its symbiotic host for eternity.

Unlike a handful of superhero movies, family plays a significant role in Blue Beetle and serves as a driving force for Jaime. Through the support and guidance of his family, Jaime finds the strength to embrace his powers and overcome challenges. This emphasis on family values adds a layer of depth to the story, making it more than just an action-adventure, and I appreciate that. The chemistry between the family is palpable, making their interactions feel genuine and enjoyable to watch while also playing a significant role in the movie.

Besides emphasizing family values, I also value the movie’s ability to skillfully balance humor, heartwarming moments, and, at times, relatable moments with serious ones. The well-timed humor adds an excellent dynamic to the narrative that keeps the audience entertained, while the poignant and relatable moments tug at the audience’s heartstrings. Blue Beetle goes beyond being a mere superhero movie by incorporating life lessons, making it an enriching experience for viewers.

Blue Beetle is a refreshing and inclusive approach to the superhero genre—and not just for its captivating storyline but also for its ability to embrace diversity in a powerful way by placing Jaime (aka Blue Beetle) and his family culture at the forefront. The film celebrates the importance of representation and showcases the beauty of different backgrounds, adding depth and authenticity to the production. Through Jaime, audiences can embrace a hero who reflects different cultural backgrounds, fostering a sense of inclusivity and inspiring a new generation of fans.

Despite its strengths, Blue Beetle does have a few minor flaws. More action sequences could have improved Jaime’s portrayal as a superhero and a longer runtime could have allowed the film to delve deeper into some of the characters, further enhancing their development and adding more depth and complexity to the story. At times, the pacing feels a bit rushed, leaving certain plot points underexplored. Additionally, the film does have a few minor plot issues, but they don’t detract from the overall storyline. These issues, however, never overshadow the overall enjoyment and excitement the film delivers.

All in all, I believe that Blue Beetle is a standout addition to the DC cinematic universe that captivates viewers with its fantastic cinematography, stunning visuals, and a solid storyline that keeps the audience engaged from start to end. The trailers simply do not do the movie justice.

Although Blue Beetle is off to a rocky start, I think the film is a crowd-pleaser, and it seems that the audience at my theater shared in the excitement, often laughing, cheering, and clapping during the movie. The positive response from the audience is a testament to the film’s ability to entertain and connect with viewers.
