Universal Pictures is exploring new ways to expand the world of Wicked after the back-to-back success of 2024’s Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good.
“Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe,” Universal’s chief marketing officer, Michael Moses, told Vulture. “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”
It’s still uncertain whether the next chapter will take shape as a film or a television series, and the direction of any future stories remains just as unclear. What is certain is that Universal sees long-term potential in the franchise and is prepared to expand it beyond the two-part adaptation.
The momentum also raises the prospect of Wicked finding a home in Universal’s theme parks. Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, has openly said the story seems well-suited for such an environment, saying of the first film, “When I saw it, my first reaction was, ‘This is a theme park waiting to happen.’”
Wicked: For Good strengthened that case when it debuted on November 21, 2025, with a $150 million domestic opening and $226 million worldwide. The numbers surpassed the first film’s pre-Thanksgiving launch, which drew $112.5 million domestically and $164.2 million globally.
The sequel now ranks as the fourth-largest global debut of 2025, behind Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch ($341 million), Jurassic World Rebirth ($322 million), and A Minecraft Movie ($313 million). It also set new records for a Broadway adaptation across worldwide, international, and North American markets.
