The strong debut makes Toy Story 5 the biggest domestic opening of 2026 so far, surpassing Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which previously held the year’s record with a $131.7 million opening weekend.

The film’s performance also means it has already exceeded its reported $250 million budget in global ticket sales, although marketing and promotional costs are not included in that figure.

Within the Toy Story franchise, the previous opening weekend record belonged to Toy Story 4, which earned $120.9 million when it released in 2019. Since the original film premiered in 1995, the franchise has generated more than $3 billion at the worldwide box office.

Among animated releases, Toy Story 5 now ranks as the second-biggest domestic opening ever. Incredibles 2 posted a larger debut, earning $182.7 million during its opening weekend in 2018.

The latest installment follows Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang as they face a new challenge in Bonnie’s life. The story centers on the growing influence of technology when a tablet known as Lilypad begins competing with traditional toys for Bonnie’s attention.

Returning cast members include Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Greta Lee joins the cast as the voice of Lilypad.

Toy Story 5 arrived in theaters on June 19, 2026. The film was directed and written by McKenna Harris and Andrew Stanton.
