California’s Great America will cease operations next year, ending more than five decades as a fixture of the Bay Area’s amusement park scene.
Six Flags, the park’s operator, confirmed that the final day of operation will be September 6, 2027. The park is set to open for its final season in March, although a specific opening date has not yet been announced.
“For more than five decades, this Santa Clara theme park has brought people together, created family traditions and served as the backdrop for unforgettable memories,” said Dave Vosejpka, the park manager of California’s Great America. “The Farewell Season is an opportunity for generations of Bay Area guests to return, spend time with family and friends, and revisit the attractions and traditions that have made the park in Santa Clara, California such a meaningful part of the community.”
The situation stems from a 2022 agreement in which then-owner Cedar Fair sold the property beneath California’s Great America to real estate developer Prologis but retained ownership of the park. As part of the deal, Great America was permitted to remain open under a lease through 2028, with an option to renew for another five years. Six Flags ultimately chose not to pursue a lease extension, bringing the park’s run to an end after the 2027 season.
California’s Great America first opened its gates in 1976 as part of the celebrations surrounding the United States Bicentennial.
