Universal Studios is exploring new technology aimed at enhancing safety on its attractions, according to recently published patent filings. The innovations, which could potentially be used at parks including Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, focus on both ride inspection and rider safety.
A recently granted patent, filed on April 18, 2023 and issued on November 18, 2025, describes a system that uses a vehicle to travel along ride tracks and check for potential issues. Equipped with sensors and cameras, the vehicle captures images of the track, compares them to reference images of how the track should look, and alerts operators if it detects any differences, pinpointing the exact location of a potential problem. This technology could enable Universal to inspect track conditions more efficiently and accurately, ensuring each section is safe and properly maintained. The image below shows the vehicle described in the patent, with labels highlighting its onboard sensors and illustrating how it moves along the track while the onboard controller assesses track conditions and other factors.

Another patent application, filed on April 3, 2025 and published on October 9, 2025, details a system of sensors embedded throughout ride seats—from the base up to the harness. These sensors can detect a rider’s body position and automatically adjust restraints to enhance both comfort and safety. The images below illustrate the patent, titled Seat Assembly Sensors and Controls, showing the placement of sensors and how seats can adjust for guests.

While these filings indicate Universal’s interest in advancing ride safety, it’s worth noting that patented technology can take years to reach practical use and may never be implemented at all.
