After roughly two months in theaters, Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael film has become the highest-grossing biopic in all-time box office rankings, reaching an estimated $977.4 million worldwide. The total pushes it past the previous record-holder, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which earned about $965 million globally following its release three years ago.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson portraying his uncle, the late pop icon Michael Jackson, the film opened with extraordinary momentum. Its global debut in late April brought in approximately $217 million.
Despite facing competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2 following its release at the start of May, Michael continued to maintain strong audience interest. In the U.S., the film consistently generated over $1 million per day well into mid-June, ultimately reaching around $370 million domestically.
International markets have also been a major driver of its success. The film has brought in close to $600 million overseas, with standout results including roughly $70 million in the U.K., over $55 million in France, and more than $30 million each from Mexico, Brazil, and Australia. In Japan, where it was released through Kino Films in June, it is approaching the $20 million milestone.
With its global total now nearing the billion-dollar threshold, Michael could be positioned to become the first biopic to reach that level. If it falls short during its initial theatrical run, a future re-release would likely be enough to push it past the $1 billion mark.
