Netflix may be looking to keep The Lincoln Lawyer universe alive beyond its upcoming final season, with a new spinoff series centered on Cobie Smulders’ character, Artemisia “Emi” Finch.
According to Deadline, Netflix has commissioned a script for the potential series after the project was pitched to the streamer by The Lincoln Lawyer executive producers Ted Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez, and Matthew J. Lieberman.
Development of the Emi-led series began taking shape before Netflix announced in May that the fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer would be the show’s last. The creative team reportedly spent time refining the concept before presenting it to Netflix, which sources told Deadline responded favorably and ordered a script with a quick turnaround.
Smulders would return as Emi, the half-sister Mickey Haller never knew existed. The character was introduced at the end of the show’s fourth season and becomes a series regular for the upcoming fifth season.
Emi’s arrival plays an important role in season 5, as she turns to Mickey for help freeing a woman who was wrongfully convicted. Mickey takes on the case as he attempts to correct what he believes is a serious miscarriage of justice.
Unlike Mickey Haller, Emi is not part of Michael Connelly’s original book series on which the Netflix drama is based. Her addition allows the television franchise to explore a new character while remaining connected to Mickey and the existing Lincoln Lawyer storyline.
If the project moves forward, production could return to Los Angeles, where The Lincoln Lawyer has shot extensively throughout its run.
According to Deadline, a series order would depend on finalizing deals with the key parties involved, with negotiations currently underway.
