Los Angeles County health officials are investigating a potential measles exposure after a person infected with the virus visited Universal Studios Hollywood in late July.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that the individual was at the theme park on July 26, potentially exposing other guests and park Team Members. Officials are also reviewing additional locations visited by the individual as part of their investigation.
Anyone who was at Universal Studios Hollywood on that day between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. is being asked to verify their immunity to the virus and monitor for possible symptoms, such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a rash. Health officials said symptoms can appear between seven and 21 days after exposure.
People who are fully vaccinated or have previously had measles are generally considered protected. Those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination history face a higher risk and should pay close attention to any signs of illness. Individuals who do not develop symptoms within 21 days of exposure are no longer considered at risk, according to health officials.
Universal Studios Hollywood said it is cooperating with the health department’s investigation.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can spread through the air and may remain in an area for up to two hours after an infected person has left. According to the CDC, as many as 9 out of 10 people who are not protected against measles can become infected if they come into close contact with someone who has the virus.
The CDC states that measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, swelling of the brain, and, in some cases, death.
Officials are advising anyone who suspects they may have been infected with measles to contact a doctor immediately.
