New reporting from TheWrap suggests plans for the Villains-inspired land coming to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World may have shifted, with sources indicating the project was reworked to “focus on bolder, bigger ideas,” according to the outlet.
TheWrap’s Drew Taylor cites multiple individuals familiar with the project’s development, pointing to a change in creative direction under Disney leadership. The report states that Walt Disney Imagineering was informed just before the new year that earlier plans had been scrapped, leaving teams “scrambling to deliver something spectacular – and quick.”
A Bigger, Bolder, and Different Vision

When the Villains land was first unveiled in 2024, details were limited. Disney shared a piece of concept art and said the area would feature two major attractions, along with dining and shopping. Since then, few additional specifics have been released about the project. However, according to TheWrap, the latest version of the land may look quite different from what Disney did present in 2024.
Sources for TheWrap say the creative benchmark for the land has shifted. Early comparisons were reportedly drawn to Dark Universe, the Universal Monsters–themed area at Universal Orlando‘s Epic Universe theme park. Now, those familiar with the project point to the Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk area as the clearer reference, suggesting the concept has moved away from a darker tone in favor of a more family-friendly direction.

One of the most significant rumored changes centers on the land’s headliner rides. Early concept art depicted a dark, high-thrill roller coaster featuring Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent. Those familiar with the project said the latest iteration may have instead shifted toward a more family-friendly coaster based on The Emperor’s New Groove. While the updated plan reportedly “loosely follows” the original “contours,” much of the creative approach has been reworked to prioritize broader appeal, with a ride style closer to Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Another rumored anchor could be an indoor boat ride themed around Maleficent, with creative elements reminiscent of international Disney rides like Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure at Shanghai Disneyland.

Sources also pointed to a third, unannounced attraction planned for the land. The ride would not require significant new infrastructure and could be a carnival-style flat ride similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant, potentially themed to Ursula from The Little Mermaid, TheWrap reports.
In addition to the attractions, the report also references a themed dining venue focused on Hades, where guests could experience a full-service restaurant concept with entertainment built around the underworld ruler and other iconic Disney villains.
What’s Driving the Rumors?
Sources quoted by TheWrap indicate that the original Villains land blueprint did not satisfy leadership’s goal. Those familiar with the development say Imagineers were encouraged to rethink and expand the scope of what the land could deliver.
One source quoted in the report framed the effort as an opportunity for Josh D’Amaro, current Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO, to leave a clear imprint on Magic Kingdom’s future offerings. The effort is said to emphasize attractions and experiences designed to connect with families and fans.
What Has Actually Been Confirmed
It’s important to note that Disney has not verified any of these reported details. A company spokesperson declined to provide comment when contacted by TheWrap. At this time, Disney has only officially stated that the Villains-themed land will include two marquee attractions along with dining and retail offerings, without sharing specifics about storylines, ride technology, or featured characters.

That said, a recently submitted wastewater planning document filed with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection provides a glimpse at how the project site could be arranged. The filing, pictured above, shows that the new land, replacing the former Rivers of America area that closed in July 2025, will include two large show buildings accompanied by a number of smaller structures spread throughout the footprint.
