After being closed for over two months, Walt Disney World has shared its reopening plans. The theme park resort closed on March 16th due to concerns about the novel coronavirus.
Disney plans to reopen its Florida theme parks in phases, with Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom opening on July 11th and Epcot and Hollywood Studios opening on July 15th. In comparison, Universal Orlando plans to reopen its theme parks to the public on June 5th. Cast member previews as well as soft openings are proposed ahead of July 11th.
According to Disney, there will be reduced park capacity and events that attract crowds, such as parades and fireworks, will be suspended to help maintain social distancing. Meet and greets and playgrounds will remain closed. A new social distancing team of cast member will be utilized throughout the parks to help guests follow the resort’s new guidelines. Additionally, Disney will expand its mobile ordering for more dining locations and enhanced cleaning will take place. Hand sanitizing stations will be increased for guests to use.
Guests visiting the parks, in addition to cast members, will be required to receive temperature checks upon arrival. Moreover, guests and cast members must wear face coverings while on property, except when dining. Disney is working to create relaxation zones for those who need to rest without a mask on.
Walt Disney World’s reopening plan has been approved by the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force; approval by the Orange County mayor and state will be required before the resort can officially reopen.
