In August 2024, Disney announced the development of two new attractions based on Pixar‘s Cars at Magic Kingdom Park. These attractions will be original to Walt Disney World and will not replicate Cars Land at Disney California Adventure. One attraction will immerse guests in a rally race, where they’ll speed through mountains, navigate trails, and dodge geysers. The second Cars-themed experience will be designed for family fun. However, to make way for these new attractions, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will permanently close. Although we welcome new attractions for the fresh experiences and stories they bring, the decision to remove the Rivers of America for Cars-themed rides seems misguided, overshadowing the very essence of the Magic Kingdom. Here are the reasons we consider its removal to be a mistake.

A Beautiful Sight to See
In any theme park, sights and sounds play a crucial role in shaping guests’ experiences. The Rivers of America offers a breathtakingly beautiful vista that enhances the Magic Kingdom’s ambiance. From the majestic view across the rippling waters to the nostalgic whistles and bells of the Liberty Belle as it travels across the river, this area truly brings the park to life. The Rivers of America transcends the concept of a mere attraction; it is an integral element that enriches the entire park experience.

A Harmonious Element within the Themed Lands
The Rivers of America seamlessly integrates with the diverse themed lands surrounding it, from the rustic charm of Frontierland to the colonial elegance of Liberty Square. This waterway acts as a connective tissue, linking these distinct areas while fostering a sense of immersion and cohesion. The lush landscapes and authentically themed elements along the riverbanks enhance the surrounding attractions, painting a picture of storytelling that is quintessentially Disney. Should the Cars attractions fail to integrate seamlessly into the park, the removal of this waterway could disrupt the delicate balance and diminish the park’s immersive theming.

An Iconic Feature
The presence of a substantial water feature is a hallmark of all Disney castle theme parks globally, and that includes Magic Kingdom. Whether it’s the Rivers of America or Shanghai Disneyland’s Treasure Cove, these waterways serve as not just an aesthetic feature but a vital aspect of the park’s identity. It sets apart Disney parks and adds to the enchanting Disney experience that guests have come to cherish. Removing this iconic feature in favor of new attractions set in a dirt environment risks losing an essential piece of what makes Disney parks feel special and uniquely magical.

A Leisurely Attraction for All Ages
The Rivers of America provides an avenue for leisurely exploration that is especially valuable amid the hustle and bustle of a theme park. Tom Sawyer Island invites children to engage in imaginative play with its dark caves, barrel bridge, and other fun activities. On the other hand, the Liberty Square Riverboat provides an enchanting journey that allows guests to unwind while cruising along the water, soaking in the amazing views. It’s a genuinely calming experience, and we enjoy gazing out the back of the riverboat as the paddlewheel spins—it complements the calming experience. These attractions provide a valuable aspect to the park’s overall experience, offering guests enjoyable options when wait times are long or when they simply need a moment to relax. Not every attraction needs to be an adrenaline-pumping thrill or a brand new addition—sometimes, a peaceful moment of reflection by a scenic river is exactly what park-goers need.

Are we against the introduction of new attractions themed to Pixar’s Cars coming to Walt Disney World? Not at all. We are hopeful they will provide fun experiences for guests. However, the idea of sacrificing the serene beauty and nostalgic charm of the Rivers of America in favor of these new rides is a trade-off we cannot support. The Rivers of America serves as a cornerstone of the Magic Kingdom’s charm, beauty, and immersive experience, and getting rid of it outright is a mistake.
Disney has not yet revealed the closing date for the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, but your opportunity to enjoy these attractions is running out.
