Royal Caribbean Group has officially unveiled its next-generation cruise ships with the announcement of the Discovery Class, marking the company’s first entirely new ship class in years.
The cruise giant confirmed it has signed a series of agreements with French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire to construct the new vessels. The deal includes two firm ship orders, along with options for four additional ships. The first Discovery Class ship is scheduled to debut in 2029, followed by a second vessel set for delivery in 2032.
“The Discovery Class represents our continued commitment to shaping the future of vacations,” said Jason Liberty, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. These ships will be a showcase of what’s possible when design meets purpose, ultimately bringing the world closer to our guests.”
Details about the Discovery Class ships are limited, with Royal Caribbean yet to reveal specifics on size or onboard features. However, Jay Schneider, the cruise line’s chief product innovation officer, has previously confirmed that the new ships will be smaller than the company’s largest vessels, the Icon Class.
Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley described the Discovery Class as a “bold” concept, combining “cutting-edge design” and “immersive moments” that place guests at the center of the experience.
“The Discovery Class introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the center of it all,” said Bayley. “It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences — from cutting-edge design to immersive moments — every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they’ve never imagined, all while visiting truly breathtaking destinations around the world.”
The announcement comes as Royal Caribbean Group continues to expand its broader vacation portfolio, which includes new ocean and river ships, an expanding collection of land-based destinations, and enhanced digital and loyalty offerings.
