Netflix has decided not to move forward with a second season of The Boroughs, bringing an early end to the science-fiction drama backed by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers.
The cancellation comes despite earlier indications that the streaming service was exploring ways to continue the series. Industry reports suggest that writers had already begun discussing future storylines, and there had even been consideration of producing additional seasons.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs premiered last month and earned praise from critics for its blend of mystery, horror, and science fiction. However, audience viewership failed to reach the levels Netflix typically seeks for major original productions.
The series debuted with approximately 5.6 million views during its opening weekend. Viewership reached 9.5 million views during its first full week on the platform, but interest quickly faded, dropping to 3.7 million views the following week.
Set within a retirement community in the New Mexico desert, The Boroughs followed Sam Cooper, a grieving newcomer whose encounter with a terrifying creature revealed that something sinister was lurking beneath the community’s peaceful surface. As the mystery deepened, Cooper joined forces with a group of fellow residents to investigate the threat and protect their neighbors.
The show stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. Additional cast members include Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg.
The Boroughs was executive produced by The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt through their Upside Down Pictures banner, alongside creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Ben Taylor also served as an executive producer and directed multiple episodes, including the series premiere.
