Disney has just unveiled new details about the highly anticipated expansion coming to Magic Kingdom, including what existing attractions it will replace.
Frontierland to Feature “Cars”-Themed Attractions
One of the standout features of this expansion is the transformation of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. These areas will be part of an expansion to Frontierland, bringing two new attractions themed to Pixar’s Cars films.
The Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be reimagined into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race ride featuring some of the world’s most iconic racers from the Cars franchise. Guests will race through mountains, climb trails, and dodge geysers. Plus, there’s a second Cars attraction designed for family fun.
“We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland,” said Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering. “Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests.”
Beyond Big Thunder Mountain: A Land of Disney Villains
In addition to the Frontierland expansion, Disney is introducing an all-new land dedicated to some of its most infamous villains. Located Beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, this multi-acre expansion will immerse guests in the worlds of the wicked characters they love to loathe.
New Attractions and Experiences
This villainous new territory will feature two major attractions, dining options, and shopping experiences themed around these iconic characters.
The Largest Expansion in Magic Kingdom’s History
With these ambitious plans, Disney is embarking on the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. Guests can look forward to new adventures, races, and a deeper dive into the dark side of Disney’s fantasy worlds.
Disney has not disclosed the exact dates for closing the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to make the way for the new attractions. However, they did mention, “Ahead of work revving into high gear next year, guests will have plenty of time to experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today.” Moreover, the opening dates for these new additions to Magic Kingdom have yet to be announced.
