Central Florida, home to major theme park destinations including Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, is seeing severe cold weather in the region as temperatures dropped Monday evening.

The cold arrives as a front moves through the region, ending a brief warmup and marking the beginning of an extended period of below-normal temperatures.

The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a freeze warning for parts of Central Florida, including Lake County and interior Volusia County. Forecast temperatures in those areas are expected to fall into the lower 30s, with some areas possibly dipping into the upper 20s. The freeze warning is in effect from midnight until 9 AM Tuesday.

Most of the rest of Central Florida is under a cold weather advisory from 1 AM to 9 AM due to cold temperatures and gusty winds that will drive feel-like temperatures into the 20s and 30s. The advisory covers Orange, Lake, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia, northern Brevard and inland Brevard counties, as well as inland Indian River and Okeechobee counties.

In addition, a freeze watch is in effect for the Greater Orlando area, Osceola County, and locations northward for Tuesday night.

Forecasters warn that the cold will not be short-lived. On Sunday, feel-like temperatures across Central Florida are expected to dip into the single digits and teens as colder air and wind combine.

“Confidence is high that below-normal temperatures will last for the next week to 10 days, if not longer. There is a low to moderate risk of much below-normal temperatures late this weekend or early next week,” the National Weather Service stated.

Orlando’s theme parks operate year-round and will remain open during the cold weather, though some water park closures are in place due to the conditions.
