Metal detectors were placed in front of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit over 2 weeks ago with no direct answer as to why it was being done. On that day, a Universal Orlando spokesman mentioned that this new security system would be used at their other roller coasters, which were not mentioned at the time. They believe the metal detectors will help prevent guests from bringing loose articles on a roller coaster and as a result, make everyone safer.

Just today, metal detectors were placed at the front of The Incredible Hulk and Dragon Challenge. Metal detectors are now located at the entrance of all of Universal Orlando’s large roller coasters, such as Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (metal detectors have been used at this coaster since March 23rd), The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Dragon Challenge. This is a technique that has never been used before, or at least not to our acknowledgement. Wait times for these coasters are expected to be longer than usual, especially for Dragon Challenge because of this. Guests with loose articles, such as hats, loose change, keys, wallets, etc. will not be allowed to board the coaster, they must either have an off-rider hold their articles or their articles may be placed in a locker free of charge during their ride. Those who fail to follow the rules will be removed from the ride or dismissed from the park.

The metal detectors will be great to prevent guests from bringing loose articles on board and will help to prevent another incident, such as those that caused Dragon Challenge to stop the dragons (coasters) from dueling. This new technique could allow the dragons to duel again but there have been no statements made by Universal Orlando as to whether or not this will happen.
