The Devil Wears Prada 2 is off to a strong start, exceeding expectations with a $77 million domestic opening weekend.
That figure easily surpasses the debut of its predecessor, The Devil Wears Prada, which opened to $27.5 million domestically in 2006.
Internationally, the film added another $156.6 million, pushing its global opening weekend total to $233.6 million and putting it on a clear path to surpass the original film’s worldwide gross of $326 million.
Produced by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, the sequel reportedly carried a $100 million production budget, significantly higher than the original film’s roughly $40 million cost. David Frankel, who returned to direct the film, told The New York Times that much of the budget went to the cast.
The sequel reunites much of the original cast, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt. Aline Brosh McKenna also returned to handle the screenplay.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 was the only major new wide release over the weekend and quickly claimed the top spot at the North American box office. Lionsgate’s Michael followed in second, bringing in about $54 million in its second weekend, pushing its domestic total to nearly $184 million and its worldwide earnings to roughly $423 million.
In third place, Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie added $12.1 million. In total, the film has reached $402.67 million domestically and surpassed $900 million globally after four weekends in theaters.
Project Hail Mary came in fourth with $8.5 million, bringing its seventh-weekend totals to $318 million domestically and $638.4 million worldwide.
