Just days after permanently closing Six Flags America near Washington, D.C., Six Flags Entertainment Corporation confirmed it is considering additional closures or sales of underperforming parks.

During a Friday morning third-quarter results call, company executives outlined a strategy focused on evaluating each park’s performance and long-term potential. Brian Witherow, executive VP and CFO, emphasized that the amusement park industry is heavily dependent on attendance. “Our expectations coming into this year were for more potential than clearly the business was able to deliver this year,” he said. “[That] is why we’re taking a step back, and we’re reevaluating each one of these parks”—their “current status, what the potential is, and what the effort is to get them up to where we know they can be, long-term.”

Witherow added that as the company moves into 2026, parks currently considered core could be reclassified as non-core if they fail to meet performance expectations.

“As we roll into ’26 and see how parks perform, there may be a need to pivot, and a park that we consider core right now—if we’re not seeing the returns on that—we need to remain nimble and shift our thinking that a core park today could become a non-core park going forward. I think we have a really good idea of which parks fit into which bucket, where we stand today, and we’ll continue to refine our thinking as we see the business evolve.”

Witherow also stated that Six Flags plans to “prioritize certain parks over other parks” and confirmed the company will “sell off and monetize parks” that “weren’t going to contribute a great deal of growth” to the overall company.

In addition to Six Flags America’s closure, the company also plans to close California’s Great America in Santa Clara, California, by 2028.

Six Flags operates amusement parks worldwide, and officials indicated that this reassessment is part of an ongoing effort to optimize the company’s portfolio and focus resources on the highest-performing properties.
