Flight cancellations at Orlando International Airport (MCO) surged this week compared to previous days as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began nationwide air traffic reductions due to the ongoing government shutdown.
MCO is among 40 U.S. airports now scaling back service at the FAA’s request. A 4% cut took effect Friday, with a 10% reduction set to begin next week, potentially grounding about 100 flights per day.
The FAA said Wednesday it is reducing air traffic by 10% in “high-volume” markets, which include MCO, to maintain safety as the shutdown strains staffing and resources. The agency manages more than 44,000 flights daily across the country. Officials described the move as a measure to ensure safety standards while air traffic controllers continue to work without pay.
Since the shutdown began on October 1, most air traffic controllers have been working six days a week with mandatory overtime. Some have started calling out, taking on second jobs, or facing difficulties to cover basic expenses while working without pay—factors that have contributed to staffing shortages and flight delays at several major airports across the country.
The reductions are expected to impact thousands of flights across the U.S., affecting the following airports:
