Rooster has officially become HBO’s most-watched comedy debut in more than 15 years, according to data released by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The series debuted on March 8, 2026, and concluded its first season with the finale on May 10, 2026.
According to Deadline, the season finale drew 2.2 million U.S. viewers across its first three days of availability. That was only slightly below the premiere episode’s 2.4 million viewers during the same timeframe. Every episode reportedly landed between 2.2 million and 2.5 million viewers in its first three days, showing consistent audience retention throughout the 10-episode run.
Overall, however, the new series is currently averaging 6.5 million U.S. viewers per episode, a figure that already places it ahead of every HBO comedy launched over the past decade and a half. According to a Variety report, only two HBO comedies have recorded higher 90-day audience averages: Hung, which ran from 2009 to 2011, and Sex and the City, which aired for six seasons from 1998 to 2004.
It’s worth noting that Rooster is still building its 90-day audience window, so viewership totals are expected to continue growing over the next several weeks.
Rooster takes place on a college campus and centers on the complicated relationship between successful author Greg Russo and his daughter Katie.
Steve Carell plays Greg Russo, while Charly Clive plays Katie. The cast also includes Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Danielle Deadwyler, and Lauren Tsai, with Connie Britton in a recurring role.
The series is led by co-showrunners Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. Executive producers include Lawrence, Tarses, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Steve Carell.
The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
