Disney has announced a series of updates to the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ride at Magic Kingdom. The updates include a new show scene, alongside enhanced ride vehicles and gameplay features.
New Scene
Created by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios, Buddy is all-new character being introduced to the ride. Buddy plays a key role on the Star Command team, ensuring that Space Rangers are well-prepared for their missions. Buddy will greet guests as they embark on their adventure, where he will provide encouragement and conduct final system checks on the Star Cruisers. In addition, Buddy will offer guests a chance to hone their blaster aim on some of the newly installed interactive targets before they blast off to battle the Evil Emperor Zurg and save the galaxy.

Enhanced Ride Vehicles
The Star Cruiser ride vehicles themselves are also receiving a makeover. The updated design will be inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. As part of the redesign, vehicles will come equipped with video monitors that will provide real-time scoring updates and display other features throughout the ride.
In addition, guests will no longer use fixed blasters to aim at targets. New handheld blasters will be introduced to improve aim and functionality. Each blaster will be equipped with an always-on laser and come in two distinct colors per Star Cruiser. The new handheld blasters will also feature an array of new lighting, sound, and vibration effects. These updates are intended to offer clearer indicators as to where guests are aiming throughout the ride.

Interactive Target Upgrades
Upgrades will be made to the static Z targets throughout the ride. These will be replaced with new technology allowing them to react and illuminate when hit, creating a more interactive experience for guests. “It also opens the door for a few other ideas Imagineers have in mind,” Disney revealed.
To add these new enhancements, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will temporarily close in August of this year, with a planned reopening set for next year.
