Disney is reportedly considering whether to keep the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World or shut it down to make way for a Monsters, Inc.-themed land, a source informed TheWrap. The closure of Muppet*Vision 3D was supposedly going to be tipped during a recent D23 presentation, but a last-minute change of plans took place.

While Disney did not confirm the fate of Muppet*Vision 3D, they did announce that an all-new Monsters, Inc.-themed land is coming to the park. This all-new area will be based on Pixar‘s Monsters, Inc. and will take place after the events of the film, inviting human visitors into the world of Monsters, Inc. and the factory itself. One of the highlights will be the first-ever suspended roller coaster in a Disney park.

Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro provided some details about the coaster: “Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”

According to TheWrap’s source, there was initially alternate artwork planned for the D23 presentation that would have more directly indicated the closure of Muppet*Vision 3D, but a late decision was made to swap the artwork for something less specific, likely to avoid negativity. Disney also deferred the announcement of what would be closing to make room for two new Cars-themed rides at Magic Kingdom until Monday.

A different insider for TheWrap, however, seems to have conflicting views on the potential location for the Monsters, Inc.-themed land. That insider suggested Animation Courtyard, currently housing Stars Wars Launch Bay, as the possible site. Conversely, another insider indicated that Grand Avenue, where Muppet*Vision 3D is located, might be a better choice due to its existing infrastructure.

Disney declined to comment for TheWrap’s publication regarding the speculation surrounding the closures.

Until an official announcement is made, the future of Muppet*Vision 3D remains uncertain. Work on the new project is slated to begin next year.
