Disney has announced new updates coming to the refurbished Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. The attraction closed in January 2025 for an extensive refurbishment, which included a total replacement of the ride track, along with the addition of “new magic.”
Among the updates is a newly designed opening scene where trains will journey underground through spectacular natural caverns, known as the Rainbow Caverns. This scene features phosphorescent pools, shimmering and illuminating iridescent stalagmites, and stalactites.
Although the newly crafted Rainbow Caverns look beautiful, they aren’t as friendly as they first appear. The rumbling sounds from deep within the mountain suggest that we aren’t welcome.
In addition to this new scene, Disney says there’s more “new magic” that will be revealed in the future.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen in 2026, although Disney has not announced a specific date.
