Six Flags is implementing additional safety measures across its parks following a fatal incident involving the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia that left one guest dead and multiple others injured.
The incident occurred on October 12, when 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem died after being ejected from his seat, striking four riders, according to authorities.
In a statement issued Friday evening, Six Flags President and CEO John Reilly shared a message for Kariem’s loved ones and others affected by the incident. He also acknowledged the impact the tragedy has had on the company and reaffirmed Six Flags’ commitment to guest safety.
“Our hearts remain with the family and loved ones of Hassan Kariem, those injured, and everyone impacted by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia,” Reilly said. “What happened has deeply affected all of us at Six Flags. Safety has always been fundamental to the experience we provide for our guests.”
As part of its response, Six Flags is reinforcing safety precautions, including adding seat belts to Goliath and other roller coasters with similar restraints.
Reilly also detailed how ride operator training contributes to the company’s safety efforts, including classroom instruction, hands-on training and supervised, on-the-job experience. He said Six Flags would continue reinforcing these practices and supporting employees in their responsibility to “put safety first.”
Beyond these measures, Six Flags has engaged independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to conduct a review of safety procedures across its entire portfolio of rides and attractions. The company said it would evaluate the findings and take appropriate action to “further strengthen” its “standards and culture of safety” across its parks.
Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia remains closed while it undergoes safety reviews and awaits clearance to reopen. As a precaution, Six Flags has also temporarily closed eight other rides across five parks.
“I know trust is earned through actions and not words,” Reilly said. “As CEO of Six Flags, I take that responsibility personally. We will continue to communicate about our progress and hold ourselves accountable to our commitments to you.”
