A fatal incident involving the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday afternoon left one park guest dead and four others injured, prompting an emergency response as authorities worked to assist those affected and evacuate riders from the attraction.
According to police, the incident happened just before 4 p.m. Witnesses reported that a man fell from the ride. The identities of those involved and the extent of the injuries sustained by the four other guests have not been disclosed.
Six Flags issued a statement, expressing condolences to the deceased guest’s loved ones and offering support to those affected.
“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected.”
The company also confirmed that it is working with investigators to establish what happened.
“The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time.”
Goliath opened at Six Flags Over Georgia in 2006. Manufacturer by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride reaches a top speed of 70 mph, stands 200 feet tall, and features 4,480 feet of track. Riders also experience forces of up to 4 Gs during the ride.
The incident comes less than two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain in California announced that its popular X2 roller coaster would permanently close amid multiple claims of severe brain injuries.
