Join us as we take a Retro Rewind trip, remembering Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast, an unforgettable staple at Universal Orlando that provided a galaxy of excitement for kids and adults alike. From its celebrated inception to its eventual closure, this attraction left a lasting impression on the hearts of many, becoming a cherished memory of theme park adventures gone by. We’ll take you through the life and legacy of a ride that, for many, wasn’t just an attraction but a trip into the heart of childhood joy and wonder.

The Birth of an Adventure
Since its inception in 1990, Universal Orlando has been evolving continuously. Dedicated to maintaining dynamic and current theme parks, Universal consistently introduces new attractions. This continual renewal has, over time, resulted in the closure of attractions, including the once-popular Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, which opened with Universal Studios Florida on the park’s first day of operation. Despite the ride’s initial popularity and reputation for bringing beloved cartoon characters to life, it saw a decline in visitor interest. Recognizing this, Universal saw the need for a new, captivating attraction to energize the park and draw in fresh crowds. Boasting a longstanding collaborative relationship with Nickelodeon, due in part to the Nickelodeon Studios situated on the park property, Universal saw immense potential in the bustling popularity of Nickelodeon’s cartoon portfolio. Making the strategic decision to align with this success, Universal put plans in motion to develop an attraction that would showcase a collection of Nickelodeon’s most popular characters, thus conceiving the idea for a Nicktoon Blast ride.

At this juncture, choosing the central figure to helm the ride was an intricate process as Universal Orlando had a plethora of beloved Nicktoon characters at its disposal. Interestingly, Jimmy Neutron—star of the forthcoming movie Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001) and show The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2002-2006)—had only made a fledgling introduction to audiences through shorts and pre-launch promotions. Though Universal was uncertain about the character’s potential success, they were confident that Jimmy Neutron would capture the hearts of audiences, making him an ideal host for a new theme park attraction. This leap of faith was rewarded when Jimmy Neutron became a hit after officially debuting on Nickelodeon. With the green light already given for a Jimmy Neutron ride and seeking to leverage the character’s increasing popularity, Universal announced Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast in July 2002. In preparation for this new venture, the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera ride was retired in October 2002. Universal swiftly navigated the transition, with Nickelodeon handling the majority of the ride film’s development. This synergy allowed for an expedited transformation of the attraction space, figuring into the timeline that would see the grand opening of Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast on April 11, 2003.
A Nicktoon Blast
Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast welcomed guests into the imaginative world of Nickelodeon’s hit animated series. The adventure kicked off in the pre-show area, where Jimmy Neutron alongside his friend Carl, introduced everyone to his lab in Nicktoon Studios, the shared residence of the other Nicktoon figures. Jimmy then offered a tour of his impressive collection of rocketships. It was supposed to be a routine presentation until the nefarious Ooblar, from the Yolkian planet, crashed the event, stealing Jimmy’s latest rocket invention so King Goobot could duplicate it for his armies to enslave the Earth. This thrusts guests into an unexpected rescue mission. Riding in one of Jimmy’s earlier, unreliable rocket models, the audience must follow Jimmy in a thrilling pursuit of the villain.
Following the pre-show, the audience was quickly directed into the main auditorium, strapping themselves into rockets and preparing for lift-off. Once the ride commenced, the chase tore through the streets of Nicktoon Studios, weaving past familiar faces from Hey Arnold!, Rocket Power, Rugrats, and more before blasting into the Fairly OddParents soundstage amidst ongoing chaos. It was here that the lovably odd magic duo, Cosmo and Wanda, intervened, albeit clumsily, allowing Carl the use of Cosmo’s wand. Wanda’s magic propels the rockets toward the Yolkian planet where they come face-to-face with King Goobot and the monstrous chicken-like alien, Poultra, who scorches Ooblar, destroys Jimmy’s new rocket creation, and wreaks havoc on the other rockets. Carl’s wish to go back home sends everyone spiraling back to Earth and plunging straight into the depths of Bikini Bottom, encountering SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends before speeding into a drain pipe and crashing back into Jimmy’s lab. Soon after, King Goobot storms in, trapping Jimmy and executing his final tactic—a forced chicken dance. Luckily, Carl’s possession of Cosmo’s wand turned the tables, allowing him to free Jimmy, defeat King Goobot, and save the universe. True to his unpredictable nature, Carl then summons a bunch of llamas, humorously wrapping up the adventure. After the ride, guests exit into the Nick Stuff store, filled with photo opportunities, interactive games, and exclusive merchandise.

Ride Technology
The ride technology behind Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast wasn’t exactly at the forefront of innovation. It repurposed the established mechanics from the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, yet it harnessed these technologies effectively to plunge guests into the beloved Nicktoon world. The attraction used an expansive theater outfitted with multiple rows of ride vehicles; these vehicles were animated using simulator mechanics. As the plot played out on a gigantic screen, guests experienced each narrative twist through the synchronized movements of their seats. Swinging, vibrating, and tilting in unison with the antics of Jimmy Neutron’s chase scene, the ride delivered an enthralling adventure. More than just a visual treat, it placed riders directly into the vibrant Nicktoon realm. The simulation technology truly shined during the ride’s chicken dance scene, which added a layer of hilarity and enjoyment for guests.

The End of an Era
Despite its novelty and the continuing popularity of the Nicktoons, Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast closed its doors on August 18, 2011. The closure was part of Universal’s plan to introduce new experiences to guests.
While the ride may have only been in operation for about eight years, it remains a highlight memory for those who had the opportunity to experience the animated adventure. It also holds a special place in not only the history of Universal Orlando but also in the history of themed entertainment. It captivated the imaginations of young visitors who dreamed of rocketing through the animated universes of Nickelodeon alongside their favorite characters. For adults, it has now become a nostalgic nod to the iconic Nicktoons of their childhood. The ride’s closure left many yearning for the whimsy and the shared joy it provided, evidencing the deep emotional connection between theme park attractions and the collective cultural experience. While Jimmy Neutron’s presence within Universal Orlando ended, the memories created continue to echo, reflecting the impactful legacy of the boy genius and the wide-eyed wonder he inspired.
Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast was replaced by Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, a new animated-rooted ride on July 2, 2012, devised to delight and entertain the next generation of Universal visitors.
As we look back on Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast, we can’t help but reminisce about the sounds of laughter and the excitement that filled the air. It was more than just a ride—it was an imaginative journey that encapsulated the spirit of childhood adventure and the fun of the Nicktoons universe. Though it’s no longer in operation, the spirit of the boy genius and his wacky world lives on in the hearts of theme park enthusiasts and Nickelodeon fans.
