A long-running rumor surrounding one of Walt Disney World’s most iconic attractions has resurfaced, with a new report suggesting that Space Mountain could be in line for one of the biggest overhauls in its history.
According to a report from WDWMagic, Disney is reportedly in the planning stages of a project that would go far beyond a routine refurbishment. Sources cited by WDWMagic claim the proposal would involve rebuilding much of the attraction’s interior, including replacing the aging roller coaster track and making significant updates to the queue and loading areas.
A Rumor That Has Been Around for Years
Although the latest report has renewed interest in the attraction’s future, speculation about a major Space Mountain refurbishment has circulated for quite some time.
The coaster first opened at Magic Kingdom in January 1975, and despite receiving several upgrades over the years, it still operates on its original track. Past refurbishments have focused on enhancing show elements like lighting and audio, upgrading ride control systems, and replacing worn sections of track, rather than a complete track replacement.
Because of the attraction’s age, many Disney fans have long believed that a more comprehensive rebuild would eventually become necessary.
Magic Kingdom Has Been Seeing Major Investments
The timing of the rumor is also notable given Disney’s recent focus on updating some of Magic Kingdom’s aging attractions.
In 2024, Disney refreshed Country Bear Jamboree, reopening it as Country Bear Musical Jamboree with upgraded Audio-Animatronics and a new show featuring renditions of popular Disney songs. That same year, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened, replacing Splash Mountain.
Most recently, Disney completed a major refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, replacing the entire track and adding new show elements throughout the ride. The attraction reopened in May 2026 after closing in January 2025.
Disney has also increased its focus on Tomorrowland, with several attractions in the area receiving updates. Just a few months ago, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopened after an extensive refurbishment that introduced new gameplay features, refreshed show scenes, and additional enhancements. Meanwhile, Carousel of Progress recently closed for its own major refurbishment, which will update each scene of the classic attraction.
Space Mountain could naturally be next in line, particularly given its increasingly rough ride experience.
What Could Change?
Exactly what a rebuilt Space Mountain would look like is unclear.
WDWMagic reports that it is uncertain whether Disney would simply replace the existing track while preserving the current layout, similar to the approach taken with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, or pursue a more ambitious option involving an entirely new track layout within the existing show building.
The ride vehicles could also receive a major redesign. Magic Kingdom’s version currently seats guests one behind another in single-file rows, while Disneyland’s Space Mountain features side-by-side seating. According to the report, a switch to a similar side-by-side configuration is among the possibilities being considered.
When Could It Happen?
If the reported plans move forward, WDWMagic suggests that Disney could reveal the project during the D23 fan event in August 2026. Once work begins, the refurbishment could take approximately two years to complete, potentially placing a Space Mountain closure in late 2026 or early 2027 and a reopening sometime between late 2028 and early 2029.
At this time, Disney has not announced any refurbishment plans or closure dates for the attraction.
