Netflix has set a premiere date for the Duffer Brothers’ next original series, The Boroughs. The streaming platform announced the sci-fi drama will release on May 21, 2026, with all eight episodes of its first season available. Netflix also shared a first look at the upcoming series alongside the release date announcement.

The series is executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, best known for Stranger Things, and created, written, and executive produced by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.

Set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community in the New Mexico desert, the story centers on Sam Cooper, a grieving newcomer whose monstrous encounter leads him to join forces with a group of fellow residents. Together, the unlikely heroes uncover a dark secret that turns their so-called golden years into a fight for survival.

Addiss and Matthews said the idea reflects their childhood interests. “When Jeff was a child, all he did was draw monsters. And when Will was a child, he started planning for his retirement,” the showrunners told Netflix. “So a show about a group of retirees who fight monsters really plays to both our strengths.”

The Duffer Brothers said the concept caught their attention when it was pitched to them.

“Jeff and Will emailed us an idea for The Boroughs: a story about retirees and monsters,” the Duffer Brothers said. “They were adamant that — unlike so many stories about older characters — this wouldn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it would treat its characters as real people facing real challenges … along with a few supernatural ones. It was exactly the show we’d been dreaming of.”

Addiss and Matthews added, “From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting, and emotional. The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror.”

The Duffer Brothers noted that while the characters may be older than those in Stranger Things, the tone is similar.

“While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things — they ride golf carts instead of bikes — the spirit is very much the same. At its core, this is a story about belonging and growing up — no matter your age — filled with adventure, wonder, comedy, scares, and tears. And most importantly, you’re going to fall in love with these characters . . . . The monsters are very cool — but it’s the characters who will stay with you.”

The cast includes Alfred Molina as Sam, Geena Davis as Renee, Alfre Woodard as Judy, Denis O’Hare as Wally, Clarke Peters as Art, and Bill Pullman as Jack.

Ben Taylor will direct the first two episodes. Hilary Leavitt also serves as an executive producer under the Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures banner.
